Oppression Launch Party! - Review and Giveaway

The amazing novel, Oppression by Jessica Therrien, is released TODAY!! So for Jessica's Virtual Launch Party, I am reviewing Oppression for you all :) and then, I have more news :)

"Elyse knows what it means to keep a secret. She's been keeping secrets her whole life. Two, actually. First, that she ages five times slower than the average person, so that while she looks eighteen years old, she's closer to eighty. Second, that her blood has a mysterious power to heal. For Elyse, these things don't make her special. They make life dangerous. After the death of her parents, she's been careful to keep her secret as closely guarded as possible. Now, only one other person in the world knows about her age and ability. Or so she thinks. Elyse is not the only one keeping secrets. There are others like her all over the world, descendants of the very people the Greeks considered gods. She is one of them, and they have been waiting for her for a long time. Among so many of her kind, she should not be very remarkable--except for the prophecy. Some believe she will put an end to traditions, safeguarded by violence, which have oppressed her people for centuries. Others are determined to keep her from doing just that. But for Elyse, the game is just beginning--and she's not entirely willing to play by their rules."

This book was absolutely fantastic! There was not a moment when I was not enthralled.

Oppression follows the story of Elyse, a 89 year old woman who barely looks 18. She believes she has a rare genetic disorder which means she ages 5 times slower than the average person - but in reality the truth is a lot more exciting! She is in fact a Descendant - someone who is a descendant born from "Greek Gods". From the very beginning, this story jumps into action, and had me on the edge of my seat for every moment - I found it awfully hard to put down!

Not only is Oppression enchanting, but it also pulls on your heart-strings. You watch Elyse discover this new world she never imagined existed, and not only the beauty but also the horror that comes with it, and you just can't help but feel for her through-out the story.

Jessica Therrien has taken Greek Mythology, and put a fantastic modern twist to it - I can not wait to read book 2!

Guest Review - Goddess Interrupted - Aimee Carter

Author: Aimee Carter
Published: March 27, 2012
Source: Publisher
Synopsis:
"Kate Winters has won immortality.
But if she wants a life in the Underworld with Henry, she’ll have to fight for it.
Becoming immortal wasn’t supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she’s as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he’s becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate’s coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.
As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.
Henry’s first wife, Persephone."
Review:
Be prepared to be completely and totally immersed in the world of Kate Winters. The Goddess Interrupted is the kind of book that you WILL read in one sitting, and leave you breathless until the very end. And by then Aimee Carter will have taken your heart and crushed it, not letting it fully heal until December when the next book comes out.
Cover:
It is absolutely gorgeous. I mean what can you expect when the first cover looks just a beautiful. It is simple and doesn't need much explaining. Other than being completly stunning. To the left is the Novella that is coming out March 1, and to the right is the first book, the Goddess Test!
Plot:
The story gripped me from the very beginning. I couldn't put it down without freaking out that I would miss something. It was full of adventure and twists and turns that I wasn't expecting! The story kept you focused and wanting more. I cannot wait for the next one!
Characters:
Welcome back Kate, Henry, Ava, Dianna, and James. They take you on the adventure of a lifetime. One that you will never forget if you read the book! I loved them so much! Even if they did piss me off.. A lot.
Lets begin with Kate. She finally has her immortality, Henry, her mom, and her best friends. Yet, she isn't happy. Something bad has happened and she wants to be, but something major is holding her back. Like the  fact that Henry was abducted and she can't do anything to save him. But she still goes into the unknown to save him. She is amazing and awesome!
Then there's Henry. He's distant and frankly annoying. I thought I was going to kill him throughout the book. He was still the sweet Henry in some scenes, yet he was a major butt head in the others. Talk about some major bi-polar issues there...

All in all: I loved this book! It was amazing! It should defiantly be on your to be read list. If you haven't read the Goddess Test yet, do it. DO IT!! :) 5 out of 5 tacos!

Here is the first chapter read by Aimee!! :) Which when I read the chapter.. I read it in her voice!

Thank you so much to Sam for helping me out with this amazing guest blog! <3

My Thoughts
This was free on Amazon and so I grabbed it while I could. I didn't even read the description, I just saw the cover and went, I am going to get it. The title, the cover, and then the description all in one is just amazing. All I wanted to do was forget about the book I was reading and read this, but I couldn't so once I had the chance to read this, I took it.
Once I got that free time, I read it, and I mean I read it within 24hours. This was a book that after reading just 20%, you just needed to read more. The storyline and the way it flowed was amazing, I loved how all of the characters were portrayed, and how each and everyone of them had something different about them. The style of the writing I easy to understand and is loved how the prologue and the epilogue was told by some-ones else prospective to give the book a better idea of what is happening. The POV is mostly focused on Claudia because of her being the main character.
Claudia being the main female character of the book has been living a normal life, apart from in her dreams. She has friends and she loves her Mum and Gran. When she finds out one of her friends has died in an accident she is upset, but then she dreams of being somewhere, and that's when she meets Michael. She always thinks these are just dreams but then she finds out the whole truth later on in the book. I love her character so much because she would do anything to live a normal life just like she has been. She is a smart and nice girl and her love for her family is just amazing.
Michael is a nephilim, a half angel and half angel, he has known about Claudia for his whole life but he couldn't see or speak to her when she was dreaming. I love his character and how he learns to love and care for her, he doesn't care if it means he will get trouble.
Aden is the main big,bad evil guy, though we don't see much of him throughout the book, but when you do its only to kidnap, hurt, use and kill Claudia. When he was mentioned or spoke in the book I actually felt a shiver run through my body, with just thinking he would do anything to get her. He does more throughout the book and then the end, he steeps even lower. I hated him throughout the whole book, but I mean all books have those bad guys who just ain't likeable, but then you are glad they are around.
There is many more characters which makes this book an amazing read.
My overall opinion of this book is that I loved this so much and I liked how the romance in this book progressed instead of just happening straight away.I also loved how the book just kept me reading until I finshed and then once I finished I just wanted more. This is one of my Favourite books this year.
I recommend this book to anyone who loved angels, love and great good and bad guys. Also if you are a big fan of YA, then you should definitely read this book. I want to congratulate Mary Ting for writing such an amazing book.

Guest Review - Sweetly - Jackson Pearce

Sweetly by Jackson Pearce

"Twelve yearsago, Gretchen, her twin sister, and her brother went looking for a witch in theforest. They found something. Maybe it was a witch, maybe a monster, theyaren’t sure—they were running too fast to tell. Either way, Gretchen’s twinsister was never seen again.

Years later, after being thrown out of their house, Gretchen and Ansel findthemselves in Live Oak, South Carolina, a place on the verge of becoming aghost town. They move in with Sophia Kelly, a young and beautiful chocolatierowner who opens not only her home, but her heart to Gretchen and Ansel.

Yet the witch isn’t gone—it’s here, lurking in the forests of Live Oak, preyingon Live Oak girls every year after Sophia Kelly’s infamous chocolate festival. But Gretchen is determined to stop running from witches in the forest, andstart fighting back. Alongside Samuel Reynolds, a boy as quick with a gun as heis a sarcastic remark, Gretchen digs deeper into the mystery of not only whatthe witch is, but how it chooses its victims. Yet the further she investigates, the more she finds herself wondering who the real monster is, and if love canbe as deadly as it is beautiful."

This is the Fairytale Retellings series but itdoesn’t matter too much if you haven’t read Sister Red (the first book) becauseit’s a whole new story, with new characters.

First things first, I know that the book is basedupon Hansel and Gretal but don’t let that put you off because it is very loosely based upon the original story, and Pearce definitely puts her own wonderful spin on it. Albeit, a strangelycreepy one.
It’s based in the modern day world, but once thecharacters actually get into Live Oak, which is so full of deception, itbecomes almost mythical and strange (whilst still maintaining a realistic edge)which I think makes the book captivating.

Unlike a lot of YA novels I found the leadgirl Grethen very easy to understand and instead of resisting temptation toscream at the character to stop making stupid decisions I found myself relatingto her very human feelings. Her grief over the past and her love for the peoplein the present are very believable.
And though the whole ‘falling in love’ bit ofthe book is quite sudden, it isn’t like whambam gooey love at first sight which I’m eternally grateful for.

The plot itself was very well written, lots ofnice twists and though you can almost guessabout one of the characters there’s a good old twist at the end that gives thestory an ending you’ll remember.

Good for older teens because it has quite abit of violence at the end.
Overall very good read!

The Hangman in the Mirror - Kate Cayley

"A strong-willed 16-year-old girl fights for survival in 18th-century North America. "
Francoise Laurent has never had an easy life. The only surviving child of a destitute washerwoman and wayward soldier, she must rely only on herself to get by. When her parents die suddenly from the smallpox ravishing New France, Francoise sees it as a chance to escape the life she thought she was trapped in.
Seizing her newfound opportunity, Francoise takes a job as an aide to the wife of a wealthy fur trader. The poverty-ridden world she knew transforms into a strange new world full of privilege and fine things -- and of never having to beg for food. But Francoise's relationships with the other servants in Madame Pommereau's house are tenuous, and Madame Pommereau isn't an easy woman to work for. When Francoise is caught stealing a pair of her mistress's beautiful gloves, she faces a future even worse than she could have imagined: thrown in jail, she is sentenced to death by hanging. Once again, Francoise is left to her own devices to survive . . . Is she cunning enough to convince the prisoner in the cell beside her to become the hangman and marry her, which, by law, is the only thing that could save her life?"

This story was interesting to say the least, however it did not keep my attention as much as it should have. The concept of the story is great, I just felt my attention would wander.

Francoise Laurent, 15 year-old daughter of a washer woman and a former soldier, has hard a very hard life. After her parents die, she becomes a maid to a wealthy wife. Her life becomes a lot better than before, having nice clothes and delicious meals. However one rash decision changes her fates for the worse. Sentenced to death by hanging, she tries to convince her cell neighbour to become the hangman, so she can marry him and wiggle her way out of her punishment.

The main character, Francoise, annoyed me. I found myself wondering what was possibly going through her mind to say and do certain things. Her cell mate, Jean, however I loved. This red-headed boy, who has already had a few encounters with Francoise, seems to just be trying to find his place in the world.

Although this story did not quite catch my attention the first time around, I feel that if I was try reading it again in some time, I might have a different opinion. Readers who love history and a love twist should love this book and definitely give it a read!

I wish I could take a picture, but I think there would be too many! I don't really have a specific place I like to read, just wherever is comfortable. Unfortunately, I have back pain so I can't stay in one position too long, so i switch from lying to sitting, from couch to bed to computer to outdoor chair!

What about you guys? Would love to see your pics!

Dying to Know You - Aidan Chambers

Dying to Know You - Aidan Chambers

"In Dying to Know You, award-winning author Aidan Chambers has created an indelible portrait of a young man discovering his own voice in the world, and has constructed a love story that is as much about the mind as it is the heart. In this contemporary love story, a teenage boy named Karl enlists a famous writer to help him impress his girlfriend, Fiorella. She has asked him to write her a letter in which he reveals his true self. But Karl isns favorite author and begs him to take up the task. The writer reluctantly assents, on the condition that Karl agree to a series of interviews, so that the letter will be based on an authentic portrait of Karl. The letter, though effective, has unexpected consequences for Karl, Fiorella, and the writer."

This book is an amazing story about life and the friendships we make.

The story is about an 18 year-old boy named Karl, coming to terms with himself and with life. He enlists the help of the narrator, a 75 year-old novelist. At the beginning, he needs his help to write his feelings on a list of various topics, as his girlfriend has asked him to do this for her. The narrator, see's a lot of himself in this young boy, and agree's to help. What's to follow is a journey with high's and low's, pushing the boundaries of friendship and feelings.

This book was absolutely fantastic, and utterly heart-warming. To watch this friendship blossom, between two men of extremely differing ages is truely astounding. Men, women, young and old should read this book, to renew a little love that may be lost.

Dying to Know You is released April 1, 2012.

"Waiting On" Wednesday - #2

"Waiting On" Wednesday

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I have decided to join the cool kids who are a part of this weekly event :)

For this week, I am eagerly anticipating -

Fall 2012

"A boy everyone calls “Butter” is about to make Scottsdale High history. He’s going to eat himself to death live on the Internet – and everyone will watch.

He announces his deadly plan to an army of peers and expects pity, insults or even indifference. Instead, he finds morbid encouragement. When that encouragement tips the scales into popularity, Butter has a reason to live. But if he doesn’t go through with his plan, he’ll lose everything."

When I first read about this book, I was 100% sure I was NOT going to read it. A boy who is going to EAT HIMSELF TO DEATH? And he finds ENCOURAGEMENT? That is now exactly what has changed my mind! I, now, can absolutely NOT WAIT for this book to be released!

What about you guys? Thoughts? :)

A Greyhound of a Girl - Roddy Doyle

A Greyhound of a Girl - Roddy Doyle
Released: May 1, 2012

"Mary O'Hara is a sharp and cheeky 12-year-old Dublin schoolgirl who is bravely facing the fact that her beloved Granny is dying. But Granny can't let go of life, and when a mysterious young woman turns up in Mary's street with a message for her Granny, Mary gets pulled into an unlikely adventure. The woman is the ghost of Granny's own mother, who has come to help her daughter say good-bye to her loved ones and guide her safely out of this world. She needs the help of Mary and her mother, Scarlett, who embark on a road trip to the past. Four generations of women travel on a midnight car journey. One of them is dead, one of them is dying, one of them is driving, and one of them is just starting out."

This book is a tale about love and loss, and the connection between daughter and mother's. I found this book both funny yet tedious. I loved the cheekiness of Mary, and some of the witty lines that Doyle has included in the dialogue, yet I also found myself struggling to keep my attention focused.

This is a ghost story, without being scary. Yet 12-year-old Mary and her mother Scarlett don't seem to be wary or worried that ghost's are real or that one has turned up on their doorstep - they just took it in their stride, which struck me as rather odd. After stealing Mary's dying grandmother from the hospital, they take a trip to the farm she grew up.

Doyle has made this book fun and serious all at the same time, I even found myself reading with a (horrible) Irish accent!

This book would be perfect for understanding death and the importance of family for a younger child - but adults would love it as well.

8 - Michael Mullin

8: The previously untold story of the previously unknown 8th dwarf - Michael Mullin

"Written in verse, this is the previously untold story of the previously unknown 8th dwarf, named Creepy. He is banished to the basement for being different and, well, weird. Yet he plays a vital - and of course previously unknown - role in the popular tale of Snow White (whose title character is an intruder Creepy refers to as "the Maid")."

This story is not quite as it seems, it is written not like a novel but more like a poem of sorts, with each sentence rhyming. It wasn't very long, however it was quite enjoyable!

This untold story of the 8th dwarf, gives the Snow White tale a bit of a twist. I don't think it would be entirely appropriate for someone of a young age, but teenages and adults should find it a short but funny read. Would love to see if Michael Mullin is going to put out another story like this!

You can snag a copy on Amazon or B&N for only 0.99c, so grab one quick smart!

Q: I like unique names for characters and am looking forward to coming up with some when I start writing. What's the most unique character name you've come across?

I think will be the one that will be said a lot but Renesmee is definitely it! Although, names like Finnikin and Froi are up there too. It's really hard these days for any names to be "unique" as names that used to be classed as different are now the norm and names that were normal are getting to be rare. But I think there are some fantastic names out there and mixing two names is great! I love reading a book and finding a name I have never seen before - although that makes it hard if you have no idea how to pronounce!!

What about you guys?

The Annihilation of Foreverland - Tony Bertauski

"When kids awake on an island, they’re told there was an accident. Before they can go home, they will visit Foreverland, an alternate reality that will heal their minds. Reed dreams of a girl that tells him to resist Foreverland. He doesn’t remember her name, but knows he once loved her. He’ll have to endure great suffering and trust his dream. And trust he’s not insane. Danny Boy, the new arrival, meets Reed’s dream girl inside Foreverland. She’s stuck in the fantasy land that no kid can resist. Where every heart’s desire is satisfied. Why should anyone care how Foreverland works? Together, they discover what it’s really doing to them"

This science-fiction novel wasn't what I expected, and I am glad of that. This book was so well-written that once I got into it, I didn't want to put it down. Plus there is a killer twist in the end and I always love that in a story!

The main character is Danny Boy, the new "poke". The story switches between his point of view, and another boy named Reed. I found the story quite hard to follow at the start, the news articles were slightly off-putting, but eventually it all starts to make sense. If you tend to pick up on things quickly, then the reason for this island, and for Foreverland may become apparent to you quite easily, where-as for me, I didn't fully get it until the end, which made it even more exciting, waiting until the last minute to know.

I think this book would suit people of any age, and any genre - it really made me wonder if this is the kind of future we may end up looking at. Scary thought!

"Waiting On" Wednesday - #1

"Waiting On" Wednesday

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I have decided to join the cool kids who are a part of this weekly event :)

For this week, I am eagerly anticipating -

"Kate and Vincent have overcome the odds and at last they are together in Paris, the city of lights and love.

As their romance deepens there’s one question they can’t ignore: How are they supposed to be together if Vincent can’t resist sacrificing himself to save others? Although Vincent promises that he’ll do whatever it takes to lead a normal life with Kate, will that mean letting innocent people die? When a new and surprising enemy reveals itself, Kate realizes that even more may be at stake—and that Vincent’s immortality is in jeopardy.

In Die for Me, Amy Plum created a captivating paranormal mythology with immortal revenants and a lush Paris setting. Until I Die is poised to thrill readers with more heart-pounding suspense, spellbinding romance, and a cliff-hanger ending that will leave them desperate for the third and final novel in the series"

I absolutely loved the first and cannot wait for this one to be released! What are you waiting on?
